General Education Reflection

During my time at Iowa State, I have taken courses varying from Microeconomics to Religious studies. Looking back at those classes, they have helped be gain a broader knowledge of the world around me. Introduction to Islam (RELIG 358) and Religions in America (RELIG 201) have showed me how important it is to respect the beliefs of those with different religions in the world. Learning how to think about a question or issue without one specific end goal has been one of the most useful skills I’ve gained from my time in the religion department. The direct application of those skills to an engineering career goes without saying. Being able to utilize reason is important not only when solving complex engineering problems but also when dealing with difficult situations that may arise in social contexts, whether they are situations with fellow employees or clients. As an engineer, these skills will be very helpful to me in the long run as they will also help in some way to establish unity for team members.

In my perspective, the general education courses I took helped me see a different point of view which I would not have gotten if I just took the core courses related to my major. As an electrical engineer, I would aspire to promote team unity while making individual contributions that are important to the overall success of the team. I owe much of my personal development to the general education courses I have had the privilege of taking while here at Iowa State.

Not only did the class serve to broaden my perspective on the rich diversity of culture and people in our nation and around the world, it also helped to open my eyes to the importance of learning how to understand other people so that I can interact with them appropriately.
